"When I started out I had big dreams about helping people. That's the reason I took the serum...back before the world made Meta-humans naturally." Absinthe says, finding that talking was helping with her queasiness. Oddly enough.
"I lived a sheltered life because of my parents so when I started going on the field I saw horrifying things I never even knew were possible. If I had known anything about it, I probably would have stayed back like you're doing."
"You've come out on top of those things, though," Eve said, a bit of awe dripping into her voice. "You're strong, now. Brave. People look up to you and respect you. They KNOW they can trust you."
She wasn't being particular hard on herself, simply awe-struck knowing that Absinthe had been through such a rough time and had managed to come out on top like this. It was obvious to see just how impressed the little chain-wielder was.
NOW they can. How long had it taken to get back to that point...? It of course, goes unspoken.
"There came a point where I had two options: Lose myself or find myself. I was able to choose the latter."
She hoped if Evie ever found herself in such a situation, she would too. Coming from someone who had her innocence shattered before her eyes at every turn.
"My friends, mostly." she says without having to really think about it.
"Sometimes people I wasn't even that close to. Paradigm was a family. We looked out for each other. We still try to remind new people about that."
But these kids hadn't gone through what she had with her group. Running from the government when all you have is each other. That's the stuff that really brings you together.
"I really want to help people remember that, too," she admitted, her voice thoughtful. "I really like to think of Paradigm as my family, you know? I didn't have a bad family life or anything, but before this whole war fiasco... I would have loved to bring Daddy and Mother here. I love the people here."
Then, her blue eyes, all glimmer and glitter, turned to the doctor again. She was looking more like her old self.
"And that means you and Jack and all of your kids, too."
"That's good. And you know, Jack and I don't expect all the students to feel the same way you do. But our hope is that eventually everyone comes to care about each other despite their differences. Even if two agents really dislike each other, saving that person should come before anything else should a situation lead to that."
She had specific people in mind over that concern, too.
"The moment you want to turn on your family, then you jeopardize everyone."
She thought of Lucien, of how willing she had been to fight him. She had wanted to beat his own lessons into him. She frowned slightly but thought about it, honestly. Abby had a good point. She actually felt bad about what she thought about, again. These Makaila's definitely had a way of getting into her head.
"You're right," Evelyn admitted. Then, she laughed, a nervous sort of laughter. "I'm sorry! This was supposed to be a nice visit and you ended up working anyways, huh?"
"Don't worry about it, this is fine. Work usually limits the sort of things I can say." she says waving it off. This felt more like normal conversation.
"Anyway, I suppose I never really told you about any situations, did it?"
"I don't mind talking about it. It's in the past. As you can imagine they aren't happy stories, so it depends on whether or not you want to hear that stuff."
She nodded and then moved to sit across from Abby, looking like a child getting ready for story-time. She was smiling again, her shoulders beginning to unknot.
"Let's see...there was the first time I killed someone." She says somewhat solemnly.
"A mission let to the group being split up to fight one-on-one with another meta. My opponent took the shape of a bear and in my attempt to blind him by hitting a beam into his campfire, I accidentally set his fur on fire. I tried to get the person behind these battles to send help but no one came. I was locked in a room hearing a man scream for his life as he burned alive. And there was nothing I could do."
The memory was never pleasant, but it didn't eat at her like it used to. The only sign of discomfort was in the way she played with her wedding ring.
"I became useless for the rest of that mission. The rest is a bit of a blur, I'm afraid. If I remember correctly, a mixture of grieving, talking with others and being forced to carry on with more missions eventually brought me back to where I needed to be. But it took some time. I developed a fear of fire, though."
