"Great." It couldn't be this simple, could it? Or was she just overthinking it to the point the elephant in the room was actually just in her imagination? Either way, she'd take it.
She swallows and shakes her head, her smile returning. Even if she counted Mike, Rebecca could still count the number of peopel who knew aobut her power being under control on one hand.
"Not anymore. I worked things out with my power about a couple weeks ago." His expression amuses her, but things also look brighter when she thinks about it.
"Thanks." Rebeca's expression brights and she forces down the wave of excitement at his smile. That's a good sign. Despite knowing that Mike is capable of telling her to buzz off or go rot, the sense of acceptance is different with the expression.
Mike had been one of the ones to believe in her, too.
"I'm glad, too. I had no idea what was going on or what to expect when I came here. I know it's only been a few months, but I feel like I've learned quite a bit."
"Mostly. There's a lot of things I can do now that weren't an option before." Like food. She taps a single finger on the edge of her tray, thinking about everything she'd done since the change.
"A lot of doors opened for me in some ways, but I'm still me." She looks down for a minute with a soft huff of a sigh, laughing at herself. "Which is good, really. As much as things have changed, I've not completely lost who I am in it." Like not being blonde and still not being a party person.
Good god she'd missed Mike. She chuckles and looks at him again.
"That's just it, though. With so many new possibilities, it's easy to think of how much I could change without the restriction. Just let it go and explore." She shrugs. "But I'm still familiar. It's like exploring, but you realize the compass you thought was broken isn't."
Rebecca starts to respond, but closes her mouth before the first word can come out. At this point, isn't she just arguing technicalities? She wants to tell him how she didn't want to look at herself at the end of the day and wonder who she was or what had happened to who she used to be. She wants to be able to have anyone say, "Yes, this is still Becca," even if she wasn't the same.
Then she remembered that life can do that to anyone in any way it pleases, powers or not.
