The announcement of war in Syria changed things for many people, including the Harris family.
Evelyn was the first one home today, working on supper and keeping tabs on the kids in the family room as they played. The smell of fresh herbs filled the kitchen, her task interrupted as a sharp squeal pulled her away with a rush.
"I DIDN'T DO IT." Rache's voice cuts through the noise, loud and shrill as Evelyn sighs. She has a feeling she knows what she's going to find.
"Did too!" Tamara, the oldest, was standing between her younger siblings, the smallest of the three being a young boy who looks up as his mother enters the room with large, tear filled-eyes.
"Alright, alright." The redhead steps in and crouches down next to Lucas, picking him up as she wipes away his tears. "What happened?" Each of them would get the chance to tell their side of the story.
Rachel makes a face at her older sister, which earns her a disapproving look from Evelyn, who doesn't jump to any direct action yet other than addressing her younger daughter.
"Did you take it, Rachel?" She can see the truck from here, beside the young girl.
"It was my turn with it. We agreed." Rachel sulks but doesn't back down from her tattletale sister's remark.
"So you took it from him while he was still playing with it." Evelyn's voice is calm as she sorts out the situation. Lucas's lip wibbles as she kneels down next to him, rubbing his back in slow circles.
Rachel looks away and mumbles something that sounds like, "Stupid Tamara."
"Thank you, Tamara." Evelyn nods at her older daughter, acknowledging the sing-song tone in her voice before turning to the middle child with a small shake of her head.
"Rachel, you know it's not right to call other people stupid." Lucas was calming down, at least, but Rachel seemed to sulk even more at her mother's words, though she didn't stop from telling her side more.
"You could have picked out another truck and played together, couldn't you?" Not that they learned to share that way, but compromise was good.
"I wanted the red one. Red's my color," Rachel insists. She'd been insisting on that a lot lately, especially since she inherited her mother's red hair.
"She didn't even ask. She just took it!" Tamara continued on, not taking the hint that her side of the story was finished.
Though before she could go on to paint a more vivid picture the sound of the front door would open up Steve entered setting his briefcase next to the door as he shut it behind him.
"Honey, I'm home!"
He'd call out, announcing his presence as he knelt down to start untying his shoes. Despite the war announcement he was in high spirits. While the announcement itself was horrible, and foretold of hard times for all of them ahead, he had faith that it would also be the start of a better future. One full of vibrant life and freedom for their brothers in sisters in Europe. It was finally time to be able to help those who needed it most.
Rachel's lips twist into a scowl as her sister starts to prattle on, ready to give the older girl her full opinion on her being a nosy tattling brat when their father returns home. Her expression warms immediately and their mother tilts her head in the direction of Steve's voice.
She also needs to get there before Tamara does in order to keep her honor intact. The truck is forgotten as she skitters ahead to greet her father. Evelyn smooths Lucas's hair and picks him up, also heading towards the entryway and making sure Tamra is with them if she isn't already ahead.
"Daddy!" Rachel launches herself at her father with an enthusiastic tackle-hug and a giggle.
"Welcome home, sweetheart." She smiles at the sight of her husband, feeling a small pang in her chest as she pushes aside the thought that they've only a few days before he leaves. She leans in to kiss his cheek, an expert child maneuverer by this point.
"Daddy!" Lucas echos. Of course, their son also leans in, reaching out for Steve with clutching fingers for his turn, too.
