Leif went to get herself food, not bothering to talk to anybody. By the time she made it away from whatever groups might be gathered, she was dragging her feet.

Settled down, she ate the fruit cup she had gotten for herself, sitting alone.

The mess hall was a veritable beehive of activity, agents and staff of all stripes buzzing around trying to satisfy hunger like only war could bring out. The air was thick with chatter, people sharing intelligence or stories of missions - be they secret raids into Imperial-held areas or direct combat on the front lines - or simply enjoying each other's company, talking about each other and sharing their lives as if to try to forget the invasive dust or the desert heat or the spectre of pain and death that now hovered over everyone in this country. Some tables were conspicuously silent, solemn, as agents thought on friends and battle buddies who didn't make it back, who wouldn't be going home. Such was war, and Aaron's heart went out to them. Here and there, reporters flitted around, some fresh like they just got off the plane, some caked in the same kind of dirt and sweat as many of the agents, all talking to any who would give them the time of day. Trying to understand and record.

Aaron actually recognised some of them, who'd talked to him while covering the Pearson incident, until he'd gotten so uncomfortable with the attention he'd asked Paradigm's press office to handle things from then on. One, he'd spoken to briefly as he grabbed a tray and got into line, doing some basic catching up and answering some questions but dodging others - not discussing his latest mission except in the briefest terms, "a successful raid to disrupt Imperial supply lines" - before making his excuses. Others had started to come up to him like sharks that smelled blood, until he shut them down with a polite but firm shake of his head. He'd resolved never to be comfortable with press attention in his time with Paradigm, lest his ego get too inflated and he start working for glory instead of the greater good.

He hadn't even wanted to come down here, but his stomach had sent him the kind of pain you don't feel in combat, you can't really train to ignore, the message telling him, "you have literally eaten almost nothing since you got here, fix that". Considering the caloric intake he was accustomed to until recently, his body probably had every right to freak out on him. He was surprised his muscles hadn't started to atrophy, maybe down to the fact regular training was simply automatic for him now, his escape from everything else. There was too much on his mind - the raid they'd just been on, the excursion with Agent Young he had to get permission for, how his parents might react to that, Sarah (he hadn't been able to avoid Mom and Dad finding out what happened with her, but at least the war had sent their focus elsewhere instead of bringing it down on her head), the fear of death - to allow for much, but there was enough to silence the pangs of hunger. He had half a mind to look for what friends he knew he still had out here, Brad and his team or Mike or various others, to take solace in their company and to tell them where he might be going, that neither he nor Agent Young knew if he'd come back, but he wasn't sure he was in the mood.

Unlike Mike, several of them would pry, Brad most of all. He would dig and claw and pull until anything Aaron put in the dark was brought to the light, and he'd say it was "for your own good". Aaron just wasn't up for that right now. Just like he wasn't up for trying to find Sarah, if she was here - she might or might not be, since unless they planned to airdrop her into Turkey she'd have to go through the Imperial forces here to get there. So, instead, he sat down at the first table that looked empty - shocking, an empty table! - and started poking at the food he brought, the lean meats and fruit and vegetables and the protein shake in a carton. His body wanted to dive in and wolf it all down in moments, his mind wasn't so enthused.

At first he didn't see Leif there, focussed on his own meal, but eventually he noticed her, glimpsing her in the corner of his eye as he worked down some food and looking up. His mouth still full, he gave her a little wave to acknowledge her.

Leif didn't seem to notice Aaron's wave and continued to eat her fruit.

That was fine, she looked like she was off in her own world. Either way too much on her mind, or just exhausted down to her bones. War would do that to anyone - Aaron was starting to feel the adrenaline dump now, the rush from keeping Rian from catching up to them and tearing them apart fading away. That, combined with how she'd looked at him before, almost like he was the enemy, made him unsure not just what to say to Leif, but whether to say anything at all. He continued to work at his food, letting her have her fruit and her thoughts, occasionally glancing at her just to see how she was doing.

For the most part, though, eating in silence was fine for the moment. He kept his eyes down on his tray.

She had made it halfway down her little fruit cup before finally just setting it aside, seemingly uninterested in finishing the rest of it. She sighed softly and turned her focus to her hands, turning them this way and that. Her muscles ached from the electricity, but she knew that would go away in time.

Balling her fingers into fists, she rested her forehead on her knuckles and took a deep breath. She wasn't certain what she wanted to do next. Well, aside from drugs. Those sounded nice.

"You okay?"

He'd heard the sigh and looked back up, watching her fidget and stretch. That mission could have gotten really bad, anyone'd be a little rattled by some of those close calls, but all was well. Or as well as it could ever be, in the middle of a war. Better than if Rian had caught them or they'd been drawn into a bigger fight, like against those six suited commandos. Sure, she'd been angry with him about things, but he could still feel concern.

Her head jerked up when he spoke, her eyes flashing a dangerously cold sapphire color. Yet, as they fell to Aaron, she seemed to relax a bit. He wasn't a threat. In fact, she still felt he wouldn't be if they were really going off, head to head. She had no reason to fear him.

Leif rubbed her face and gave a shrug. "Tired."

"You look it."

His tone was sympathetic, as he tried to give her a little smile, unaware of her thoughts on if he were a threat or not. Frankly, he had no interest in her thinking he was or wasn't. It was good that she was relaxing at least, and he indicated his tray with a little nod. The food on it was still hot, and there was still enough to share if need be.

"Want some? Maybe it'll help."

Leif made a face of disgust at the sight of the food on his tray and shook her head quickly from side to side.

"Nope. Nooooope. I'm good, thanks."

"All right, if you say so."

Aaron didn't look offended or anything, giving her a good-natured shrug and taking his tray back. Though he did take a quick glance at it just to see what she reacted so negatively to, examining the greens and the fruit and the meat as if checking it for contamination.

Maybe just dietary preference? Hrm. Well, he wasn't the type to judge for that.

"Just thought I'd offer."

"I, ah... I'm good."

She motioned to her fruit cup. Anybody who had ever seen her eat before knew she barely ate anything at all, and more often than not, they only saw her with fruit. Sometimes, they would see her with vegetables.

She shuddered and shook her head again.

"Thanks again, I guess."

"No worries."

Aaron had never seen her eat before, but he did notice that all she had was that tiny fruit cup. Not to mention how even that didn't seem to be holding her interest. He slid the tray away a little as if to divert her attention from it as he noticed the shudder, frowning a little - not in displeasure, just concern.

"Long's you're okay."

She really looked like she wasn't feeling well, or was that just his natural instinct to worry about people?

"I'm always Gucci, man. Seriously."

She tried to smile, just to prove her point. She had a way of making even her fake smiles look at least a little genuine, so it didn't take much for her to slip back into it.

"I just don't get to flash-flash around with the shadows. My power actually comes from my own energy."

"Just that you looked like you were gonna be sick, just now."

The smile was good at least, and he still wasn't judging, though she got a nod and an interested, thoughtful little noise from him as she mentioned her power. He'd seen it in action a few times, now, but aside from them being energy scalpels of some sort he didn't have his finger on it.

"I've been curious about those scalpels, actually. What do you make those out of?"

"Her own energy" could mean a lot of different things.

She lifted her hand in front of her face when he asked about her scalpels. She could feel the electricity flashing through her muscles as they appeared between her fingers again. She winced slightly, hand already sore.

They wobbled in and out of existence for a second before solidifying. Her energy was still low. "Why don't you guess?"

"Don't push it for my sake," he said at the wince, smile fading again even as he looked at the scalpels. If she really wanted him to guess, he'd try. Hrm...

"Stab in the dark, I'd say something similar to Mike's soul construct things. Though it could be metabolic energy, too - superpowers are kind of weird in what they draw from."

She snickered and shook her head, letting them disappear. She reached up to tap her temple.

"They're literally my energy. Mike..." Just saying his name made her smile, a soft sort of smile. "Mike uses his soul. I use the electricity my body produces."

"Bioelectricity, huh? Cool."

Electrokinesis was a really interesting power, one he sort of wished he had himself. There were so many different potential uses for it.

"Is it just the scalpels, or do you do other stuff with it?"

One shoulder lifted and fell in a shrug.

"I can make small bladed weapons. Scalpels are just my favorite, but I can make kunai too. And I want to eventually work on something bigger... a sword or something."

"Well, 'fun' might not be the right word. Sorry."

Weapons, fighting, hurting people? Those aren't fun, they're things they do and use because they have to.

"Still, sounds like a pretty cool power. Bioelectricity seems like it'd be really versatile."
