"Well... My parents were Vietnamese immigrants. Mom died from having me, dad died from a car accident on the way to the hospital. My mom's sister, Phuong, and her second husband, Paolo, were at the hospital though, so they adopted me. The doctor said I was blind, so I was raised blind, enrolled in a school for the blind, and that's how we met Nova. Nova just got out of prison or was on parole. After some time, we found out I wasn't blind, which made sense since the doctor was arrested for malpractice cases."
"It was a really, really long time ago, so I don't remember it too well. But, I was told that I stumbled around a lot as a kid, was bad at eye contact, and just one day asked what seeing was, and it turned out that I was assumed to be blind. 'Cause the silver fog over my pupils looked like cataracts. I wasn't even ten when we figured out I could see."
"They died on a cruise while I was in high school. It's okay though. By then, I was already working and living on my own since I was old enough. The economy was different back then."
She was skirting the poverty line, but she was panhandling, working the Network, working at libraries, and was a part-time stunt performer. Insurance was alright for the last one, and sometimes the residual checks that came in ranged from pitiful to livable, depending on the movie.
Winning the superpower lottery was a curse as much it was a blessing.
"Man... Elder spirit essence... I'm just imagining someone magic just summoning something and selling its... Residue wholesale. What a world we live in."
"Unfortunately magic profiteering is a real thing. That's one of the things the Scribes try and prevent. Can you imagine a magic item running rampant?"
"Every universe has an economy, ours just happens to revolve around paper."
Eugene sighs and waves his hand over a tablet, scrolling through it.
"I poked around a few times about it. Crazy thing is there has been nothing about it documented anywhere in our entire database. It was here, but as far as our records go, it never was. And we don't even know what 'it' was!"
"Yeah, I mean you hear all the time about how little of the universe we understand right? Apply that to all the various universes we know are out there and our percentage of understanding drops like crazy." Eugenes eyes bug out.
"I try not to get engulfed in deep thought like that though, otherwise I'll drown. When I contemplate too deeply it's like a bad trip."
She recalls one time projecting flashing lights into his brain a long time ago. He was kinda cute, in a cat spellbound by Christmas lights sort of way.
"I'm sure. Scary to think that people are getting elder spirit essence further down the line, though watered down. Studying my ink, making their findings. And the essence I have is just from one of them. I'm not sure if I even want to hunt for the person who bottled the essence in the first place. It's a lot to take in."
"I've always known the chemical as a black market serum. Something that bestowed powers. I wasn't stable enough to figure out what it really was."
As for a detail that sticks out though...
"I will say though, someone once removed my powers through a painted symbol. Then, a green light said there were still traces of my power in my eyes. They removed those traces, then I could see again... I'm not sure if I was meant to see or not see before I got injected, but is that an important enough detail?"
Let's see... Valencia draws the symbol in the air.
"It looked like that, and redirected my power to a machine. As for the green light, reports designated it as L.I.F.E. I wasn't really around for most of that though."
"It redirected my power and ink to powering a hadron collider. Thanatos's, or Jeffrey Winchester's symbol was what led me to searching and finding the Scribes."
"No... Think of it as a particle accelerator. As news headlines would put it, it would theoretically allow us to access parallel dimensions if the research and experiments worked out."
