In the meantime she keeps looking through, checking to see if her hunch was correct about it emitting some kinda signal. Or if it changed them some other way!
She thought so...so she probably could at the very least lessen the radius. Yes...yes. If it was a handheld device, like some sort of pen...large pen....like maybe more of a wand-looking thing, then the radius would just need to be a couple feet around the holder. As long as you're carrying it, you get the signal. Perfect. It's not like Kuni would be going anywhere, so he doesn't need a city-wide signal anyway.
So now that she had an idea for the design, and she was already downsizing everything, she just needed to make sure it all could work like that. And there was also the other mystery. She starts looking for what part of the machine specifically targeted Kuni and Vlad, so that the signal didn't interact with any other people caught within it. Ie. The entire city.

"Mm. Of course." she nods to herself. She had a assumed it had something to do with that. But she had expected some sort of bio-scan. She forgets how old this thing is.
She does contemplate if that's necessarily important in a smaller one. It shouldn't affect anyone else if it's a small radius, though she doesn't know if inmates here get any 'recess' time. And if they do, then the machine could potentially, very briefly, make someone else smarter. Maybe just to be safe...she'd implement the blood sampling.
She takes both out, checking to see if either are labelled. Because she'd rather not ask Kuni for any blood.
But that doesn't mean she needs to ask for Kuni's blood, necessarily. There's still enough to run tests on the blood and have some leftover to work with.
Oh she knows, the thought was more about not leaving the vials there.
Also the fact she's not sure where to locate a machine like that now that Paradigm fell. Mmm. Maybe Aegis has that sorta thing. She'll worry about it later as she puts both vials away.
"I guess all that's left...is to attempt to fix it." she mumbles.
"And...get a sample of Mark's blood so I can tell if it worked."
Which means she needs him to come back. But one thing at a time! She starts trying to repair the machine, taking guesses at what tubes needs to be fed where, and what wiring goes where. Hopefully if she gets it wrong, the machine will just not work instead of...giving Mark some weird radiation.
Though, she doesn't have quite enough metal to repair everything, but luckily Mark enters again with his arms full of shovels, horseshoes, rakes, and other farming equipment.
"This machine would transmit a signal, just as I thought. So they could go anywhere and still be intelligent. The signal somehow actually changed their DNA, and the way it only targeted them was through a blood sample. So while the signal was city-wide, it only affected them." she explains.
Then casually add in.
"I'll need a vial of your blood."
Then just continues.
"So Kuni was under the effect of the signal when he donated...which means I could inherit that aspect of him....which feels like cheating now." she admits. But fuck it, she'd rather this than be an idiot.
"Well, you know...it was intelligence granted through a machine. It's not his REAL DNA...so to speak. So I wasn't born this way because of anything special with any of my parents. If Kuni did this without ever using the machine I may have been a very different person. It's all just...circumstance."
