Mathew was finally free from... other business. And having acquired where the remnants of Chicago's Paradigm were holding out he'd make his way there. Just walking into the hotel room without ceremony.
He didn't say anything for at least a minute and a half. Just staring at Rhett. Last he had seen Jan Di and Josh he had told them to do what must be done. The understanding being that Rhett was working for the enemy and had intel on all of their agents and faculty. That the information would only be safe if he was killed.
Rhett was supposed to be a dead man.
"I know. And I knew I was right to trust Jan Di and Josh to do the right thing."
The smile faded away, replaced with his standard stern look.
"But I am happy to see they found another way other than killing you."
He'd sit down on the free bed. He was a long way from trusting Rhett with anything remotely sensitive in terms of information. But after all these years it was hard to look at Rhett and not see family. He had been around when she was alive... And he was there when she died. He had put a lot of faith in Rhett, and that had been betrayed. The trust was broken, but the affection was still there.
"You fucked up. Badly."
But he was still family in Mathew's book. And family wasn't something to be thrown away lightly. Even betrayal, he'd faced that before when he was younger. The Dragons he grew up with had a fluid loyalty to one another. As mature as the Agents all were, they were still kids, and loyalty was a complex emotion and feeling. Especially when conflicting loyalties come into play.

"I've hated myself for what I did for years now. None of you deserved it, especially... the ones that ended up passing from what I did. But I wanted to tell you that I am sorry, even if it doesn't mean much."
The conflicts were not going to go away. And if he was really going to join them again he'd have to be ready to regain the trust of everyone his actions harmed. Directly or indirectly. He'd have to be willing to face against the Empire.
He says with a sigh. Rhett starts limping over to sit down as well, though not really close to Mathew.
"Up until shit hit the fan with the academy, I had to stay monitored by either Josh or Jan Di. But I don't want that to be it. I want to make up for what I did, somehow."
Not that he really thinks there's a way to do that.
"First thing you gotta do is get that leg healed. You'll be useless on the field like that."
But the truth was there was no quick fix or easy answer. He could kill the leader of the Empire tomorrow and it still wouldn't bring back anyone killed in the attacks, or from the intel he had gathered. It was possible there would be people that would never forgive him, no matter what he did. But all of that didn't matter if he couldn't even walk yet.
He considered the words. It was the choice Mathew had made when he was younger, choosing his brethren in the Dragon's over his neglectful family. Preferring the honest hostility and violence to the subtle torment and disappointment. And again he had made the choice when he turned his back on one vision for the future of the betterment of Bastille, and later their child.
"If that is your choice and path then walk it. The challenges along it serve to test your resolve. But overcoming the challenges that bar your path will make victory all the sweeter."
He didn't quite smile, but his features softened as he reminisced about the path that had lead him here. In some ways Rhett was similar to a younger version of himself. Not in all ways, but not everyone had the courage to choose a family rather than sit with the one they were born into. It was hard to grab onto a Fate of your own making.
"You're gonna fuck it up." He said as he unfolded his arms. Placing them on the bed, one on either side of him as he leaned back just slightly. "But so does everyone else."
"Take it from me. It's never to late to change to the right path."
As a former villain he had to work through similar problems of trust. A path that wasn't easy, and it wasn't quick. But eventually he gained people's trust and respect. And if Rhett was honest in his desire to make amends then he would win back most people. Mathew was certain of that.
"And if you find yourself faltering you know where I am."
