Most upstanding members of Society are given a System Identification Number(SIN) at birth. Your SIN is how the UCAS monitors and tracks the activities of it's registered, citizens. Your SIN serves as your passport, Criminal Record, Birth Certificate, and Credit Score. Everything you do is linked to your SIN and is able to be looked up by corporations and law enforcement.

Many, but not all, Shadowrunners lack a SIN. For whatever reason, they have slipped through the cracks which allow them to operate more or less off the grid. Though that comes with its own downsides. No credit history and proof of identification can make it a challenge to land the normal clean jobs that your everyday citizen may hold. And the lack of Credit Score makes purchasing a house or other respectable.

It should also come as no surprise that there is a market for fake SINs, of various quality and encryption. All of which is highly illegal, and rarely do they come cheap. But a fake SIN or two can be invaluable to a clever Shadowrunner.
