"Things have just been really messed up lately," she says at last. "I've been messing up. I've hindered agents when trying to help them. A girl on the roof is convinced my problems with my powers can be solved by apologizing to a piece of fruit. Someone else thinks I should embrace this power - whatever that means. They think I'm scared, and they're right.
"One of my friends is falling apart and I think I made it worse. Dr. Gavyns says this wasn't my fault, and I don't believe her.
"I attacked one of my friends without a thought. If it hadn't been for another agent grabbing my attention, I would have. I fully intended to kill him, even if I didn't know it was him.
"What if it's not something to do with the guy from the grave? What if this is all actually because of me?"
Again he didn't speak for a little while after she finished. His brows furrowed as he thought about what she said. It sounded like a lot had gone on since they had last spoke. And he felt bad for not being there. Not that he had avoided her, but he certainly made no additional effort to make sure she was okay after seeing Silas in her pod.
He felt like a jerk.
He'd glow blue as he reached forward to grab her chin and gently lift it up so that she would actually look to him and not the ground.
"It's not you. And if it is not the guy you fought and has to do with your power, then you will learn to control it. That's what we are here for. To learn, and that means mistakes."
She didn't think much about the blue glow at first, seeing as how she knew Mike's power; she probably should have. Wide eyed, she stares at him as his hand is suddenly touching her, jerking in response to another person touching her without warning or consent.
What is with people touching her all of a sudden?
It takes her a moment to realize he's using his shield to protect himself, his words sinking in a little slower than they normally would.
She softened a fraction when he told her that she wasn't going crazy, and he was right. That's why they were here. Paradigm had surely had worse.
"I understand, but yeah." She shakes her head. She doesn't like surprises. "It's just that there's been a lot of people touching me lately, and they don't back off. They know what I can do and they let it happen." She grimaced, glad to have her bubble back.
"At least you used your shield." His reaching out gave her a bit of hope that things coudl be less rocky between them. This time, she looks at him of her own will, with a tired smile.
"Because other people don't have them, and I'm kind of tired of dealing with people joining the trend of 'Let's touch Becca and keep going until our arm pusses and our skin rots!'" Her hands jerked as she resisted the urge to throw them in the air.
She would have felt really horrible and then some.
"For listening," she added after a moment. "And reminding me of what I needed to hear." You know, friend stuff.
"I don't know!" She quickly drops her volume, realizing she'd almost shouted.
"Sorry, I just don't know. I've been trying to figure it out, but they think it's going to help me accept my power, I guess." She makes a face, sticking her tongue out in disgust for a second before sighing. "That or it's a sick joke." Debatable.
Another moment of silence as she thinks over his last question. "I just knew you were mad at me. I didn't know what that would mean."
"She," Rebecca corrects happily, laughing as she adds, "I named her after the spider in Lord of the Rings." So big. It seems quite content to stay where it is until Mike stops moving.
