Mathew was sitting under the largest tree in the courtyard as he waited for Evelyn to finish with her classes. It was training day and he was eager to help her along with her progress. She was growing up so fast, and like her Mother she seemed intent on pushing her boundaries. In finding out exactly what she was capable of. He saw her Mother everyday when he looked at her giving him hope for the future. And no matter what the Empire claimed with their treaty Mathew didn't think it would last.
At best it was a ploy to buy time while they finished something. He'd seen to much to believe that they took everything they wanted. People didn't just decide that they had enough power. Not the people that decide to take it by force at least.
The flock of students pouring out of the building is a sure sign that class is over. Laughter and chatter fills the air, as does the occasional shout and farewell. Amidst them all is the familiar figure of his daughter, Evelyn, who breaks away from a couple of friends as they head towards the bus.
"Dad!" Her face lights up at the sight of her father waiting for him, and she waves before bounding over to him.
Evelyn goes along, and her enthusiasm grows as they get closer to their spot. Out here, there was less a chance of causing damage to people, though not necessarily things. But that's why it was practice!
"Yeah!" Her school supplies are already cast aside as she stretches, fingers flexing towards the sky like she could draw it down to her, then going into a more defensive position as she grins.
He'd walk away from her so that there was some distance between them. He'd bring both of his hands up in front of him and establish firm footing on the ground. His fingers would flex as he prepared himself.
"Don't worry about if I'm ready. This is about you."
"'Kay." The grin stays in place, shifting more towards determination and delight in the challenge as she instead races towards her father, trying to feel any indication where the next spikes will come from by ground vibrations.
The second ball is thrown when she's much closer, intending to go around behind him if she can.
There is no attack directed at her. But rather another pillar would come out of the side to hit the ball again! He'd whip around when she goes past him.
She nods, rushing her father as electricity arcs between her hands. It grows brighter the longer it passes between her hands until she aims it at the air around Matthew's head, intending to blind or disorient him withe the light and change in the air before following up with another, smaller ball of electricity!
