The long ride home from the short hospital visit* with her father wound up being longer than Rebecca intended, mostly due to the fact that she hadn't wanted to come back to Paradigm just yet. She'd stopped by the library closest to the hospital, instead, but at the end of the day, Paradigm and its dramas and dangers was still home.
Taking a deep breath, Rebecca leans against the gates that separate the campus from the rest of the city, listening to the cab leave not even a moment later. She felt pathetic and useless, like she'd flushed everything she'd worked for down the toilet herself. Her father was still her father, her progress still lacked, and she was no closer to freedom for any of it. Now he'd probably be keeping a close eye on the news to see if she'd pop up again. Then what? She didn't doubt that her father would follow through with his threat to remove her from Paradigm.
She needed to move, she realized as she opened her eyes. They were still red and now scratchy from holding back the tears. She should move and --
No. She should move because it was dumb to stand in a doorway and not expect it to open at some point or be in someone's way.
There was a lot to learn and a lot of questions to answer, but for now, she walked the ground without any solid sense of purpose other than to pull her thoughts together.
Piper was wandering the grounds, lost in her own thoughts, when she saw the familiarity of black billowing. She turned to make sure she saw right. Becca. She had just gone on her date recently, right? That would serve a good distraction.
Possibly for them both.
Huddling deeper into the sweater she wore, she jogged lightly to catch up with her friend. "Becca! Rebecca," she corrected herself, coming up to her side. "Hey, mate."
She doesn't stop at the familiar nickname, lost in her thoughts too far to be pulled back by the first attempt. But the sound of her full first name draws the dark haired girl up to attention as she turns on her heel to face whoever is calling her.
"Oh." She blinks, expression softening when she sees the familiar face and green hair. A smile flickers into existence for a second before fading again. "Hey Piper. Sorry. What's up?" Her hands remain in her pockets as she stays in the same spot.
She caught that body language. She knew that body language. She SHARED that body language.
Concern flashed across her face and she slowed her approach, walking with her hands out to her sides, palms exposed. It was something she learned to do with Angel, a primal way of showing she meant no harm. She offered a smile, but her lips covered her teeth.
"Seems I should be asking you that," she commented softly. "Wanna go get a coffee? I'm sure I can whip something tasty up. It'll be nice and warm?"
"Where would you be more comfortable?" She asked softly, tucking her cold hands into the pockets of her pants. "We can get some coffee and sit in my room and talk, if you'd like."
It wasn't an offer she made many people. Piper kept her room perfect, immaculate, and militant, and having people in her room risked messing that up. But Rebecca was her friend, and... Well, she trusted her.
"Sure." Again she nods, letting Piper lead the way. She hadn't gone visiting other people in their pods of late, and it was hopefully quieter than the cafeteria.
"Hopefully it's better than the stuff they have there, too. It's either cdepressing muck or super fresh because everyone swarms it at once."
"I can make a pretty good cup o' joe," she said, leading the way towards her Pod. She was concerned, but if she could get her friend talking about something - Anything - maybe it could lead to whatever was bothering her.
"Everyone else is probably asleep, so we'll have privacy. How do you like your coffee?"
"I doubt it," she said with a chuckle. They hadn't complained about her night time romps with Aaron or all the nights she came in late. She assumed they were all just heavy sleepers.
"That's it? I can do, like, specialty coffees. Hazelnut, caramel, honey... Whatever you like, within reason."
"Oh." Another blink as she considers it, some of the fog clearing. "Mmm, just a hazelnut mocha, then. I don't want to take up too much of your stuff." No dairy, now that she was thinking clearly. She nods, a hint of a mile returning. It's still not super complicated, but Rebecca's working with what her brain's giving her.
"Hazelnut mocha. You got it." That was easy enough, and it was something Rebecca liked. She stored that away in her memory.
Walking beside her friend, she gave a nonchalant sort of shrug. "Busy is an understatement." But she didn't want to talk about herself. They always, somehow, ended up talking about her. "What about you? You've been gone a while."
They are still in her pockets, because it's cold! She'll remove them once they're inside the main dorm building, however.
"Sounds a lot like me and the infirmary, but with more success." She makes note of which pods they pass, having no idea where Piper lives. Her gaze seems to be going everywhere at once, both hungry and reluctant.
She looks at Piper out of the corner of her eye at the mention of where she's been, but gives a slow nod after a while. How much of what does she say to the other girl?
Piper stopped them just outside of her Pod, but made no motion to open the door. She turned, instead, to look at Rebecca, and if she'd allow it, take the girls hand.
"Look... You don't have to say anything," she said softly, trying to offer her a comforting smile. "You can also say everything. I'm not really good at this whole friend thing, but I'm trying."
With a shake of her head, she promised, "Nothing goes outside my bedroom. But you've let me be completely open, and you've been my sounding board and companion. You can let me be that for you."
Then, she would turn, letting go of the girl's hand and unlocking the door.
She doesn't flinch at the touch, but doesn't respond much either. In the walls and grounds, it didn't matter. She could be, given the proper precautions. There was no warning that was as much contempt as self preservation.
"Okay."
She closes her eyes and nods, opening them again as the door opens and they enter the pod.
She didn't try to push it. She just led her friend into the Pod, pointing out her door. "You're free to make yourself comfortable, if you'd like. I'll go make the coffee."
She headed off into the kitchen, her brows furrowed. What had upset her so much?
Rebecca makes herself comfortable by taking off her shoes at the door and following Piper into the kitchen! She leans against the counter and watches, curious to see what she'll do. Plus it puts her closer to the source of the smell of fresh-brewed coffee; definitely a win.
"You're doing just fine, by the way," she adds after a moment, reaching for a small smile. It's not much, but there might be one. "I'm just not great company right now; thanks for hanging with me."
This player has no experience making coffee that isn't, like, regular coffee, so yeah. Let's skim that part.
Piper obviously had experience making homemade coffee, and was able to make a pot of hazelnut and mocha coffee easily. She sort of hummed as she worked, offering Becca only a smile in response.
She turned around as it brewed and reached up for two of the simple coffee mugs they had. She didn't seem bothered by the motions... In fact, it made her significantly more comrortable. It was so familiar.
She watches Piper work, relaxing more with the silence and the smell of coffee brewing. She watches as the other girl also seems more relaxed as they go.
"Do you prefer Piper or Sarah?" Her voice is low for privacy's sake.
She froze for a solid moment, staring at the coffee as it started brewing. She needed something else to focus on.
"If you asked me a week ago, I might have wanted to hit you for even saying that name," she said softly.
She sighed and then turned around to look at Rebecca. "I don't know, right now. There are some things that I... need to figure out. But... If it's just us, Sarah is fine."
She offered a weak sort of smile, then turned back to the coffee.
"A week ago, you hadn't given me a drawing signed by a second name." She smiles faintly. "I figured maybe you just preferred your middle name, but I can keep it between us." She brushes some of her hair behind her ear, an absent-minded gesture. "Thank you for that, by the way."
"It's really nice. You should draw more often." She pushes herself upright, resisting the urge to wander around a pod that isn't hers.
"It's weird. People think we're aliens, just because we have powers. But you have another name. We make new friends and lose others. A candidates wants to catalog us. We get accused of being terrorists, even by the people we try to help." Her volume drops at the end as she sighs and shakes her head.
"Sometimes, I think I understand why you asked me why I keep doing this. Why I want to."
"You gave me a damn good answer that day," she pointed out, listening to the click that said their pot was ready. She pulled it out and began pouring each of them a cup.
She turned to hand Rebecca here, holding the warming porcelain of her own with one hand. "Do you remember what you said?"
"Sort of." She would like to think she remembers exactly, but she's not that lucky. When offered, she'll take the cup of coffee, rubbing her thumbs along the sides.
