"Clavish, yes, Empire, no... 'Cause the one in the void was there for a long while, even if time was wonky there. From what little I know of Empire Jim, the Jim I know would have to snap a whole lot to become that. And come back from the void after being there a really long time."
"The Jim I know died, and didn't come back. Or, in a way, COULDN'T come back, since he was in the void and not one place or another. Limbo."
When Jim "returned" from the dead, she was in Paris investigating.
"I never got the chance to meet Jim from the Empire, but since he's so different from the Jim I know, my guess is he's from another dimension. I've been to several of them, met counterparts, learned of some that wanted dominion across space and time. Wouldn't know what he'd want here though. Been too busy to keep up."
"Maybe he can't go back. Perhaps he found something he wouldn't find in his own dimension. From my experience with immortals, he's probably occupying his time with some hobby or other. Short term goals."
"I think if he is working with the Empire like reports indicate it's gone beyond a hobby. Ruling and terrorizing a continent isn't exactly like collecting stamps."
"Hell if I know? And that's scary as shit. All I know is that apparently he is running Turkey? But information beyond that seems pretty sketchy. Though I heard he was in Chicago not long ago, though the team sent to bring him in failed."
And they all have or had different reasons why you wouldn't want to meet them.
"Anyways, on the matter of your ability... Or at least the void I visited. It's an unusual place. You had to do a lot of unconscious or abstract thinking to allow yourself to do anything there beyond floating. Diving in and out of it via death and revival was little different from instinctively swimming to the surface of a pool. The Jim I met there spoke in another color while trying to figure out how I did it. He changed in size, changed perspective..."
Gengar gives Valencia the book it ate.
"Now that I think about it, I wonder if what you do is a physical version of accessing the void. The reality we feel is the top or bottom planes of the fabric. The Nexus is on the other side, and the edges of the fabric are the void. The space between dimensions."
"That's kind of what I was thinking. Like, if we are in this reality. But there is another reality that we will call Reality B. The Nexus is what connects those two places. However I always thought there was something else. Something more akin to the classic Greek Chaos. The Nothingness where Everything sprung from. Something that connects us to the Nexus."
He hesitated before waving his hand and two portals would appear on either side of Valencia. She'd feel the air and world around her violently rip apart.
She looks through one and out of the other! Eric shook his head.
"Just one. Two sides of the same coin. And so it is when I open up portals to grab objects. But I normally don't feel anything but the object when I do. Where with this, I can reach through one and poke you. So to me that always said to me that the portals were creating the items, rather than me stealing them. Or if not the portals, wherever I opened them up to..."
Could it be her void? He'd close the portals and she would feel reality mend itself back together, though much weaker and stretched thin where the tears had been.
"I don't know. I don't exactly have someone that can show me the ropes, so I'm just kind of figuring it out as I go along. I don't think they are the dimensions themselves since I can get to the Nexus. So I mean, they are probably doorways. But there seems to be a difference between the type of portals I can make? I don't know."
The ones that he just opened just feel violent and painful. There is a faint smell of something familiar, possibly the void from the portal that he pulled an item out of for her. However all of the portal residue and Eric himself just reeks of wrongness and death. Something that doesn't belong. Something that shouldn't be here. That should not exist, or does not exist.
"Not everyone's born with a power like this. Of course, powers do manifest in weird ways. I'm trying to figure something out... Don't worry, you're trustworthy. I'm just baffled by how you emanate this presence that's similar to your portals. I don't think you can feel it."
