Well, he was back to his place in the time line and patched up, but he still didn't feel any closer to finding out how to use his power safely. He'd considered using the hat to try and find a shortcut. Perhaps it was stubbornness or pride that stopped him from trying that now. He imagined that THE GREAT FAUSTUS expected him to do something like that. And he wanted to prove him wrong. Prove that he was capable, and also that he was going to be the greatest sorcerer himself someday!
The magic hat upon his head was in what he considered to be it's neutral form, a top hat. And he'd enter the library with a small sigh as he debated where he could even start looking to find out where to start looking for answers on how to use his powers without consequence. Without ripping the fabric of reality around him to shreds.
Valencia was putting books back onto their shelves with the assistance of her familiar-like Gengar. She looks up upon feeling something odd... Familiar, but odd. Something concerning the fabric of reality. She's been sensing it from time to time, when she's at Paradigm, but this time, it's recent. Present even.
She lets the Pokemon continue putting the books onto the shelves (more and more out of order the less she supervises) to investigate.
She'd find herself drawn to a young man that had just entered the library wearing a top hat. The hat was clearly magical to her. It was glowing like a beacon, but there was something off about the young man that wore it. There was a sense of wrongness from him. Something out of step and out of sync with the world around him. Like he was fuzzy around the edges but those same edges threatened to rip the air around him.
He'd make his way along the bookshelves toward the science section of the library, paying Valencia little heed as he seemed lost in his own thoughts. But as he passed she'd be able to pick up a pungent odor quite like nothing she had ever smelled before. An almost toxic mix of the silencing and death of everyone who had ever been born or yet to be born and burnt toast.
The hat was normal enough, in a weird way. Magic wasn't a common thing, but likely enough to happen after all she's seen. She wonders if he knows that his hat is magic. What stood out instead was... How do you say this... Eric's presence emanating a mixture from beyond the void. It was weird. She knows what the fabric of reality is. She's seen the void many times, particularly when she used to die and live again. But for something to be when it isn't? This person was human. Was he? Or he magic too? No. This is confusing.
Valencia approaches.
"Excuse me--"
Gengar throws a book at Eric's hat, finding the target unique enough to knock over.
He turned toward Valencia with a book on theoretical physics in hand, flashing her a smile before the Gengar knocked off his hat with a book! The hat fell to the ground shifting slightly in style to something closer to it's actual age.
"Hey!"
He'd bend down and snatch up his hat which would quickly return to it's previous form!
The Pokemon would laugh in triumph and return to putting the books onto the shelves upside-down.
"I'm sorry for that. I'm Valencia Tiao, the librarian. If you don't mind me inquiring, you are aware that your hat is magic? And that there's something strange about your presence but we'll talk about that in a bit--?"
He didn't really want to say the name in case it made him appear. He wasn't really sure on the rules of that yet.
"Reality Warping witch?"
So she had magic too? And reality warping? If that was anything how it sounded she might be what he was looking for. Or at least a step in the right direction.
"I got my power through an imperfect serum, my power manifested as cartoon-based reality warping, then too much innovation allowed me reality warp in general, until finally I got assessed by other magic folk that I'm actually magic. I'm still figuring that part out."
"Paradigm has dealt with magic in the past. The magic community largely keeps to itself when it's not getting culty and out of hand though. I largely taught myself what I know since no one else was around to teach me."
Valencia struggles to keep in the biggest sigh ever. Jaded by 20 years of experiences.
"You don't even know the half of it. Still wondering if keeping it secluded is a good idea with how long the Empire have been on the other side of the world."
"Oh, I use it. It's just that I think the universe is collecting after I've been using it so much. Some unsavory people studied what I was capable of when my... Residue was left around willy-nilly, and I'd prefer to protect this knowledge as much as I can to limit how much can be done with it. Half of me is capable of powering a Hadron Collider. Just think what'd happen if I ended up in the wrong hands. Again."
"Yeah. I've thought about that too. It's why I decided to not go to Europe with the war declaration. I think it would be better to stay here. Where I can't be captured."
Literally ripping the fabric of reality... Yup. That would explain it.
"Sounds tricky. I mostly know bending instead of tearing. But you could control your ability enough, right? You can't tear at the universe on accident?"
