"Sure." Another awkward nod. She looks around them, feeling more like an awkward turtle than she had in a while. If only she had a shell for a barrier in reality.
The dots connect, thankfully, though she looks at Evie. Her frown starts to reappear as she considers her options. It's on the tip of her tongue to turn the girl down.
"I'm not really much of a party person." Again, she looks away, taking a slow, deep breath, glancing back at Evie and hoping her expression doesn't sink like the Titanic, or she might feel bad.
"But I can hang around for a bit, at least. Can we bring guests? My boyfriend would probably be happy to join in."
Rebecca takes the widened eyes in surprise, since she didn't exactly expect it to happen, either. The rest...Rebecca isn't sure if she imagined it or not.
"It's going well," she admits, smile growing a little more as she chuckled. "I don't think either of us were expecting it, not with each other especially. But we're here, and we're happy together." She absently twists the bracelet she got for Christmas as she thinks how easily this would never have happened with anyone.
Rebecca glances over at Evie with a careful expression as the girl continues to go on with an extremely bright voice about how great things are. After asking who her boyfriend was, as if she didn't know.
Fuck.
"..." The cogs are losing their rust as Rebecca recalls the date she'd walked in on, though it had just started. Evie had seemed so surprised at that word being used. She actually starts to feel bad.
"Sorry, I should have realized..." She shakes her head and trails off, hands dropping to her side, only to slip into her pockets a moment later with her elbows tucked in to her side, leaving even more space between them than before.
How many other girls Eric had dated were oblivious to their relationship? The ones that still liked and were interested in him? Not that she expected a public announcement or for him to go around making sure everyone knew the moment they hooked up, but this was more than awkward.
He would have known what to do. She scrambles to find something else to talk about. It's almost as bad as lingerie shopping with Sarah with Eric oblivious.
"So, uh, fun fact? This is going to be the first time I've had a snickerdoodle."
Should have known... Evie was close to trying to pull the whole "should have known what?" card, but Becca saved her from that humiliation, at least. She still couldn't quite get her breathing to normal.
"O-oh?" she asked, trying to change the topic to the cookie. "They're really good! I like them a lot, and I really like baking. It helps soothe my nerves."
"Yeah?" Where's the nearest hole so Rebecca can crawl into it and hide for the rest of the afternoon? She's already trying to find a swift exit, eyes darting around the lawn for a familiar face or just anything to distract them and help them part ways.
She looks down at the bag of cookies, debating on giving them back to Evie since they apparently help calm her nerves. Her stuttering's too obvious for even Rebecca to claim ignorance.
She takes a deep breath and carefully opens the bag, retrieving a cookie or two depending on size with a deft movement of her fingers, offering them to Evie.
"Then go ahead. We'll even try them together, if you like."
Rebecca gives a tiny nod as Evie takes the cookie, but the gesture's not as warm as one might hope. She's starting to settle, if only a little, and tells herself that Evie would have found out one way or another before long, maybe even at the party. It was better to know now than be blindsided later, or come across them kissing or something.
She's also trying not to dwell on the faces that pop up in her memory as Evie continues on. Mike, Silas, Sarah...she was seeing their side from a much more open source, heart twisting at the realization.
"To Spring," Rebecca offers the small cookie up in a gesture, taking a bite a moment later. She blinks, glad for the size so she can give a small, strained smile when she finishes.
Evie popped the small cookie into her mouth but didn't seem to taste it, her gaze falling away for a moment. When Becca spoke again, she looked back to her and smiled.
"Yeah... I'm glad you like them..."
Giving a shake of her head, she took a deep breath.
"Anyways! I'm going to go see if I can cheer somebody else up too, okay? Let me know if you want help before the party!"
See? She's still offering anyway. Evie is such a freaking fluffball.
"Awesome! Thanks for the time, Rebecca. It was really nice to get to talk to you."
Even if you broke my heart.
She waved before turning and bounding off, her enthusiasm obviously fading as she got further away. If Becca paid attention, she'd notice that Evie was bee-lining it straight for her Pod.
Rebecca notices. She's just not sure what else there is for her to do about it. Alone time is something she'd probably want, as well, for something like this.
"Great," she mumbles with a sigh as Evie disappears from view.
She's not gong to that party. They already have a history of ending badly here.
